It's eerie how this song in many ways describes how I felt when my girlfriend of almost 12 years (since high school) broke up with me...this 3 months after we had gotten engaged...had a hall booked and did the pre-Cana conference thing. We were supposed to get married in August, she married someone else in October...really cold shit...33 years later and I'm still not over it, God help me.

Greatest American band ever.

The Smithereens deserve to be as celebrated as other big names in American alternative rock of the eighties like R.E.M. and Hüsker Dü.

Nobody, and I mean *nobody*, can write a heartbreak song like Pat can.

I was at the store the other day and the person who works there actually said "So you're alone - again?" And I thought to myself, 'everybody knows I'm alone at midnight!'"

exactly. in some weird way, i guess im glad they never 'exploded' as far as the recognition they recieved goes. they are like 'my' band, and not my friens band, if that makes any sense?

really good observation- they are seldom so completely tragic that you take a heavy heart away from the song- more bittersweet, like the lament of some wounded soul who knows he will live to love again.

im with you. there is rarely an experience i go thru in life that i cant find a smithereen song to relate to it. amazing band really.

@unkleskratch its all such great stuff. i share them with everyone i know. some of them get it, some of them dont. pat writes such gloomy stuff, but theres always a hint of optimism there.

@unkleskratch The thing that I love so much about them is the fact that they can write such catchy tunes that are also beautifully melodic with REALLY interesting chord changes. I mean, maybe they are lyrically simple but most of their tunes are about LOVE...how philosophical can you get with THAT?!? LOL

Especially For You is my favorite 80's album. I wore out the LP and two cassettes. I have it on two CD's....keep one in the house and the other in my car. My two fav songs off it are this one and Time & Time Again

@smithereensfan- Oh, I dont think I could possibly choose a favorite- Strangers When We Meet was the first one to really sink a hook in me, but I was kind of living out the lyrics at the time. Great music for a young man with a freshly broken heart.

They're weird because the songs have a kind of ditzy, bubblegum effect, lyrically- they should just be typical pop hit of the summer numbers, but there is some latent element- the band is so tight, the guitar hooks are powerful, and DiNizio's voice is so rich. So Yes, I think they are weird because they are so talented -songs like these shouldnt stick with you, but they do.
