I have an unusual story having to do with this song. Back in 2014 I adopted a rare type of Australian parrot from a local animal shelter: a blue bonnet parrot who was advanced in age, in poor health, and had never been tamed or otherwise bothered with at her former home. As soon as I tamed her, we were over the moon about each other. I learned the words to this song (which took considerable effort for a Yank). Then I'd sing it to her as she'd lay in the palm of my hand and I'd rock her like a mom would rock a baby. I was working on learning the words to "I am Australian" by The Seekers when my bird had to cross the Rainbow Bridge. I buried her at the local pet cemetery with her head towards Australia and "Thank you for Waltzing Matilda with me" printed on her grave marker. I always keep a flag of Australia there. Hopefully my Tiffany Lynn and Slim Dusty have met up and she perches on his shoulder and sings while he plays.
