Man, I love this guy. I found a delta blues book of tablature with some Mississippi John Hurt songs in at the exact same time i first picked up a guitar with the intention to learn to play it. I think I was 8 or 9. I positively did not get it. The music. Well i never actually heard the recordings til years later.. but even then... i could play classical music very well but I still cant do this kind of finger picking style. SO... my children. please learn it in my place. :)

Yes. Master Segovia thought so too.

Andres Segovia, listening to this recording, commenting positively and then asking who's the other guitarist playing the bass rhythm. Wow!

The thing about John Hurt is he sounds like 2 guitar players. Exquisite!

I like MJH's version of Stagger Lee or Stagolee better than any other.

THE GUITAR PLAYING OF MR. HURT IS THE BEST. HE MAKES HIS MUSIC SOUND SIMPLE AND SWEET. BUT WHEN I TRY TO COVER IT I FOUND ITS VERY COMPLICATED AND TAKES A LONG TIME TO LEARN A SIMILAR STYLE. IVE PLAYED FOR 40 YEARS. I WISH I HAD DISCOVERED THIS MUSIC A LONG TIME AGO. MR HURT IS A TRUE MASTER AND WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE SO MUCH OF HIS MUSIC AVAILABLE NOW

Great song and video. Unfortunately, the opening and ending pic is not John Hurt. It's Honeyboy Edwards. Also a very talented delta blues musician. And he is still alive and touring today. Just saw him play at The Hideout in Chicago for his birthday. Pretty cool. If you get a chance, you should check him out. He's the last of the real delta legends!!

it's cool listening to this in juxtaposition with Blind Willie Mctell's, 'Lord, Send Me an Angel'... very similar and you can see the progress

Never heard this track of his. I have three of his albums my dad converted the cassets to cd also. I have some really good stuff. Truely probably the best blues figer style guitarist ever

This is why so many describe Mississippi John with the two-word statement "gentle perfection."
