It is not just the pain those people go through but also the pain that people around them go through. People in depression or hard times tend to forget that! Tend to forget that people around them have feelings and pain too, which is the most selfish thing to do, thinking your alone in this world.

He just said that the fact that committing suicide is selfish is true. He did not judge the person committing it, but the action. You might argue, that this person killing themselves are desperate, but that doesn't make it less selfish. After all, what does the person feel like, that has to find the dead body of someone they (most likely) know. And don't get me started on the relatives and friends the dead person has.
