"A Hazy Shade of Winter" is a song written by Paul Simon and recorded by Simon & Garfunkel in 1966 for their 1968 album, Bookends (although it also appeared on their Live from New York City, 1967). It peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the second most popular song on the album after "Mrs. Robinson," which earlier reached #1.

The lyrics evoke the passage of the seasons, but (as the title suggests) focusing on the gloominess of winter. The chorus of the song repeats:

But look around,

leaves are brown now

And the sky

is a hazy shade of winter

Look around,

leaves are brown

There's a patch of snow on the ground.

I don't really know the covers, but this is the definitive version. It's the original, enough said! There aren't many that compare with Simon and Garfunkel from any generation, least of all the one we are in right now.

i know S.and G. originated the song but The Bangles version with Susannah's lead vocal and all the other female harmonies, layered with the hard guitars makes a better richer and fuller sound. Bangles win!

In Cleveland Ohio back in the 60s the Salvation Army Band would play on the street corners in our Collinwood community in the summers - all the kids and people would gather around them great memory. Drinking my vodka and lime. No snow here in Arizona though thank God.
