1976 (Shirley Bassey hosts Charles Aznavour on her 1976 TV Variety Show. Shirley first performs Aznavour's, 'Dance In The Old Fashion Way' and Charles comes in half way through and dances with Shirley. Then, Charles sings another one of the songs he wrote, 'Yesterday When I Was Young.' The song, 'Yesterday When I Was Young' was a big hit for both Charles and Shirley, and Bassey has performed it live more times than probably any other artist but maybe Aznavous himself.

This song, 'The Old Fashioned Way' was recorded and released on Shirley's 1973 LP titled, 'Shirley Bassey - Never Never Never'

ABOUT this song:

"The Old Fashioned Way" is the English version of Charles Aznavour's "Les plaisirs demodes" song. The song was released in English in 1973 and became a hit in the UK.

YRICS:

Dance in the old-fashioned way.

Won't you stay in my arms ?

Just melt against my skin and let me feel your heart.

Don't let the music win by dancing far apart.

Come close where you belong, let's hear our secret song.

Dance in the old-fashioned way.

Won't you stay in my arms

and we'll discover heights we never knew before,

if we just close our eyes and dance around the floor.

That gay, old-fashioned way that makes me love you more.

Come closer, forget about the others.

It's nice to be like this, cheek to cheek,

in the old-fashioned way.

It's funny, but, I have the feeling that we are dancing as our parents used to do.

Well, maybe they weren't wrong :

the world changes, love stays.

Dance in the old-fashioned way.

Won't you stay in my arms

and we'll discover heights we never knew before,

if we just close our eyes and dance around the floor.

That gay, old-fashioned way that makes me love you more.

ABOUT Yesterday When I Was Young:

This song was recorded and released on Shirley's 1970 LP titled, 'Shirley Bassey - Something'. Bassey's UK comeback came in 1970, leading to one of the most successful periods of her career. In this year, she returned to the UK with a record breaking run of performances at the Talk of the Town nightclub. Also in that year, she released the album Something, which showcased a new Bassey style, a shift from traditional pop to more contemporary songs and arrangements

ABOUT the original songwriter, Charles Aznavour:

Charles Aznavour OC, (born Shahnour Vaghenag Aznavourian[1], May 22, 1924, Paris) is a French-Armenian singer, songwriter, actor, public activist and diplomat. Besides being one of France's most popular and enduring singers, he is also one of the best-known singers in the world. Aznavour is known for his characteristic short figure and unique tenor voice; clear and ringing in its upper reaches, with gravelly and profound low notes. He has appeared in more than 60 movies, composed about 1,000 songs (including 150 at least in English, 100 in Italian, 70 in Spanish, and 50 in German, and has sold well over 100 million records. In 1998, Charles Aznavour was named Entertainer of the Century by CNN and users of Time Online from around the globe.

LYRICS - Yesterday When I Was Young:

Yesterday when I was young

The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue

I teased at life as if it were a foolish game

The way the evening breeze may tease the candle flame

A thousand dreams I dreamed

The splendid things I planned

I always built alas on weak and shifting sand

I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day

And only now I see how the years ran away

Yesterday when I was young

So many lovely songs were waiting to be sung

So many wayward pleasures lay in store for me

And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see

[ Find more Lyrics on http://mp3lyrics.org/bIv ]

I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out

I never stopped to think what life was all about

And every conversation I can now recall

Concerned itself with me and nothing else at all

Yesterday the moon was blue

And every crazy day brought something new to do

I used my magic age as if it were a wand

That never saw the waste and emptiness beyond

The game of love I played with arrogance and pride

And every flame I lit too quickly quickly died

The friends I made all seemed somehow drift away

And only I am left on stage to end the play

There are so many songs in me that won't be sung

I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue

The time has come for me to pay

For yesterday....

when I was young.....

Hi Scot! I took another look at " SOMETIMES " yes! I can hear the difference, I must admit at 68yrs old my hearing is not what it used to be so I had copied your lyrics so I could clearly understand the song which has such beautiful lyrics, I don't think that unless you have suffered tragedy, loss or adversity in your life you would fully understand this song, thankyou for sharing it and for all your hard work in trying to make this song clearer. Best wishes, Carolyn.

Hi 4everyoung447: I wasn't happy with my 'Sametimes' clip and re-uploaded it. Since it is a MP3 file I extracted from a vinyl recording, I've tried again to eliminate as much of the static as possible. It's unfortunate, but this magnificant song has never migrated to Digital CD Format as Towerbell went out of business. Don't even know who has the tapes. I also added a few more pictures of Shirley into the clip. I hope you take another listen/look and LIKE the revised upload...Regards, Scot

BEAUTIFUL! BEAUTIFUL! BEAUTIFUL! Two beautiful songs, great camera work especially on the face of Charles Aznavour, In the first song when Shirley was embracing (him) I was not sure it was going to be Charles Aznavour even though I could hear him talking etc. What a lovely surprise when he turned around and it WAS HIM, GREAT VIDEO I LOVED IT!

hey thanks for the magnificent upload! not to be a nuisance or a nit-picker, but if you could please correct the video title? It says "Aznavous" instead of "Aznavour;" viewers and fans might not be able to find the video as easily unless it is corrected. cheers mate!

This is just QUALITY entertainment. i was just talking to a long time DSB fan the other day about this clip. I have not seen it in a long while. I enjoy it more everytime I see it. Thank you!!!!! Dame Shirley is so funny in this. The chemistry is so great between her and Charles. He is amazing too. His song Yesterday is magnificent. I am used to Dame Shirley's version, which I love, but his version is beautifully convincing too. I had never seen his performance on her show. Many thanks Scot.
