The first song I heard from the Shirelles was back in the late summer/early fall of 1960. I wouldn't be surprised if it charted at the same time in this area as song # 3189 which was of course a rockabilly sound. The Shirelles created a pop sound, not necessarily rhythm and blues. Shirley Alston was the group leader and of course she was a native of New Jersey. But I did not know that then. I just loved the sound and even if it spanned a length of only two minutes, it was two minutes of pure hook. "Tonight's the Night" at # 3185 from the Shirelles.

Another great song co-written by the magnificent, and mostly-forgotten tunesmith, Luther Dixon. He also co-wrote "Boys," "Mama Said," "Baby. It's You," "16 Candles." "Soldier Boy" and Chuck Jackson's "I Don't Want To Cry." In addition, he was responsible for several minor hits that were recorded by Perry Como, Elvis Presley and Bobby Darin. This piece was co-written by The Shirelles' lead singer, Shirley Owens, who is, as of March, 2015, still living.A controversial song for the time, 1960, as it is essentially about a woman losing her virginity. Yet, it was a big hit, and deservedly so...

Back when production was truly an art. Pre-all the current technology. Great "girl group" hit followed by "Will You Love Me Tomorrow". All those high school dances when someone would turn off the gym lights and the "administration" would turn them back on. Retrospectively innocent times compared to today's jaded sensory-saturated world. Or maybe it is just because I'm 64. Grateful today for YouTube...
