Shinyribs can refer to either veteran Austin musician Kevin Russell or the unique lineup he plays with when he steps outside of his usual role as co-frontman of The Gourds, one of Texas' longest-lived and best-loved roots-rock bands. His music is even more versatile than his name (and similarly versatile to his main gig), veering between downhome rock & roll, acoustic soul, countrified ballads and shades of everything from Tex-Mex to gypsy folk to sea chanties. Fresh off the release of his second record under the Shinyribs banner, Gulf Coast Museum, he's handy with just about any instrument with strings depending on what best frames his warm, unmistakably twangy tenor on his newest material.
