Actually, I think the point this song is trying to make is the feeling of hopelessness; a feeling that no matter how much love you express for others, it's not enough to fill in the holes of depravity, violence, and apathy. But in the end, it takes strength to love, and that's what the lyrics plead for by the end of the song. Just my interpretation, though.
