I love the obviously non-prompted response of the audience once Johnny sang the first line and they realized what was in store for them! Those hushed, awestruck oooohs and ahhhhhs were very real!

I saw them in concert in late 1970s. They covered those songs perfectly w/ no lip synching even playing their own instruments. The opening act was Andy Kaufman whose Elvis was the perfect lead in for Sha Na Na. A fantastic show!

maybe this is why the shows performance are identical to the studio recordings that are on vinyl. As a sound editor, I can hear the vocal overdubbing and signal processing. To the untrained ear, I can only suggest a better quality video monitor...where it's a dead give away that it's lip syncing. I respect Johnny, but he saying it's sang live, is strictly intended for the credulous viewer.

"All music (songs) was pre-recorded." No, only the background (instrumental) music was pre-recorded. Johnny sang live. The most obvious give-away is the fact that you can actually hear him breathe in while he finishes his phrases and words. If it were a track, you would not hear those little sips of air as he breathes in. Also, Johnny himself said on his website that the background was pre-recorded and he sang live. He could not, however, vouch for the other singers and say it was live.

'All' music (songs) was pre-recorded. In fact, many of the shows songs are identical to album recordings. It's just the way television works. Its not only obvious visually, but you can also hear the the over-dubbing if you listen to this through head phones. No worry though, Johnny is an amazing vocalist!

I don't think Johnny lip synched to anything. If we have learned anything from other posts on YT is that SNN played to recorded music. Maybe they played live on the show once in a while. When Johnny sang So In Love that was definately live. I know you must be really laughing right now. Dirty Dan's guitar solo in the beginning of Running Scared - now that was live. Teen Angel was definately live singing.

Saw Sha Na Na at Sheppard AFB in '74, and although I've seen all the great bands of that era, Sha Na Na was a 1st rate live show. Added: Johnny is lip syncing to a (for their show) recording...the recording is awesome.

What a beautiful voice! He could hold his own with Roy Orbison.

I love this voice, we watched it every week. I sing and was looking for some refresher course, I understand he gives lessons..but can't contact through the info given. Anyway, he still sings great to this day...and I agree with the statement that they never got the credit they deserved. Awesome group, Johnny touches the heart.
