A free mod, anyone can do it, no soldering, all parts remain original. Credit goes to Scott Grove (groovydjs) who came up with that idea in one of his videos. NOTE: I replaced the pickups October 2013. Click the link in the video for review and sound samples of the new pickups.

Subtitles/ footnotes don´t seem to work on some devices. So here´s the info: The "before the mod" section starts at 3:27 and the "after the mod" section at 4:33. The order of the sound files is always: bridge pup, middle position, neck pup.

First part of this vid is filmed with a digital camera, second half is recorded from a Fender Mustang III amp via usb directly into Garageband.

The "before" part of the comparison was recorded two years ago so I can´t remember the exact volume or usb level settings, but the preset is the same as in the "after" section. It´s the Mustang´s Basic `65 Deluxe preset without any change to the tone or gain settings.

Strings are D´Addario .11s on both takes.

Intro and outro are also played with the modded G5120.

I'm a little confused. What's the mod exactly? The mod isn't shown here, and the video quality is poor so I can't see the holes he's taking about. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Now that was a sound-changing, practical mod and demo! You captured that mid-60s surf sound so damned well! Grooveman has some good ideas, doesn't he? I can't wait to try it on my gorgeous but muddy 5120.

I like the sound. And the humbuckerality of the pickups should be preserved, since the coils aren't modified , rewired, or unwired or anything. I wonder how well this "mod" would work with other double-row pickups. It doesn't cost anything to try it, I guess. I loved the sound of the HiLo'Trons that came in my Tennessee Rose. I replaced them with TV Jones Filter'Trons, because I could, then sold the guitar because I didn't like playing it anymore. It sounded thud-like. Since, I've bought used HiLo'Trons that someone who was as dumb as I used to be was taking out of a Gretsch and installed them in an Epiphone WildKat. These are sweet sounding pickups. Thin, bright and chimy, but somehow quite different from a regular strat pickup. Now I'd like to find some Filter'Trons that some fool was replacing with after market pickups and try your "mod" with them. Hmmmm . . .

This is actually a very common mod, I think it's a unique tone, it's not like a true single coil but it's like a nice bright spanky tone not unlike the coils in a humbucker wired in parallel. Sounds great.

First off this is not "Scott's mod". Check out the Dimarzio Bluesbucker that's been around for years. But long before that I knew guys in the 70's that were de-mushing their Les Paul neck pickups this way. Nice try though...great tone-killer.
