Sarah's accompanied by Hal Mooney and His Studio Orchestra. Recorded in New York, April 24, 1957. (Mercury Records)

The very thought of you makes my heart sing

Like an April breeze on the wings of spring,

And you appear in all your splendor,

My one and only love.

The shadows fall and spread their mystic charms

In the hush of night while you're in my arms.

I feel your lips, so warm and tender,

My one and only love.

The touch of your hand is like heaven,

A heaven that I've never known.

The blush of your cheek whenever you speak

Tells me that you are my own.

You fill my eager heart with such desire.

Ev'ry kiss you give sets my soul on fire.

I give myself in sweet surrender,

I surrender dear

To my one and only love.

Sarah Vaughan had the most divine voice. I love her recordings with Billy Eckstine - Passing Strangers!

So strange, I feel so moved by this song. I feel moved by all the music between the 20's till 50's. Although I love many different kinds of music, this music gives me the feeling I was there once.I always felt out of time and still do, dreamt many times of being an adult in this erra. ( I was born in ''88 ) The clothing, the way of life, the beautiful scenery. Can't explain it, maybe others have the same feeling, if you do please share. Can't really describe it because English is not my primary langauge as you can see.Still a fantastic song, brings peace to my heart.

There is a version of this song by Johnny Hartman, with John Coltrane, that is soooo moving. Hartman has one of the best baritone voices ever, and is so smooth. If you can find it you are in for a treat. Hartman doesn't come in until about 2 minutes in, but is preceded by some very sweet saxophone by Coltrane. A masterpiece.

Her voice is just the best ever. unfortunately, she was not well served by her arrangers. This kind of singer does not need all the strings and lushness. Betty Carter and Ella both had better arrangers -- they emphasized spare and gentle arrangements that highlighted the voice. Still Sarah's recordings will live forever.

It's almost impossible for me to love a woman vocalist's version of any tune as much as I love an Ella Fitzgerald version, but Sarah Vaughan in general, and this tune in particular, may be the exception.
