@JDGFGE The reason it DOES matter who wrote it, is that it is a creation. Joni didn't have Sarah's advantage of hearing how it sounded, and deciding which songs to cover. That's all right. Time will regard Sarah McLachlan as one of perhaps a dozen great singer-songwriters. But by any measure, Joni Mitchell would be at the top of that class. She and Carole King practically invented the genre.

I love both Joni and Sarah's versions. Sarah has more melancholy (that's part of Sarah's overall style). Joni's is great as the original we all loved; it's like the Beatles they will always be the original and the best version of any song for most. I did have the great pleasure of posting a version from Cindy Alexander (winner of NBC's Star Tomorrow), which was posted on xmas day 2011. Search YouTube for "River Cindy Alexander".
