Compare to the great anime outside, Sakamichi no Apollon is not on the great list. Because of the topic Jazz, it destined to work only on minority crowd. As an apprentice of jazz, I got to tell you how much courage them have to make an anime like this, because it will not work charm like K-ON. It's realistic plot, trying to tell you what real musician is, with no charming face or fancy cloth, no tea time during practice, no fixed band member in the real band idea, old man in band, band can be happen with only duo (piano and drum), the exist of trio, quartet, discrimination on black music. The most important: they don't use "fly me to the moon" again again and again. At worst it is "Satin Doll" or "My Favorite Thing". I never expect to have an anime that use pure jazz as main plot. PS: I enjoy how they potrait those epic album in the record store from time to time. John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Chris Connor...
