Cast member of it gets better, Sacha Sacket, was badly bullied in high school. Born in Iran, Sacha didn't disclose the harassment with his family and experienced severe alienation and depression. Years later, he discovered the story of Jamey - a young man who made a video for the It Gets Better Project documenting his own similar bullying experience. Tragically, Jamey took his own life in the fall of 2011 at age 15. Sacha wrote this song in one sitting in response to this tragic news, and he graciously shares it onstage as part of our performance.

This version was recorded live in the Shatto Chapel at the First Congregational Church in Los Angeles - the same space where we held development workshops and rehearsals for the project.

Lyrics:

He tries to understand

He turns the pages

They say he's not a man

It burns in stages

And so

Here's how the story goes

He dies to let you know

That the kids won't quit

And his heart don't fit

And his life is shit

They say it's such a shame

The war and wages

They find some kids to blame

And turn their pages

But no

Here's how the story goes

He died to let you know

That the kids won't quit

And his heart don't fit

And his life is shit

If any of you have not heard my friend Sacha, you really should watch this video and more on YouTube. He is absolutely brilliant. Songwriter, musician, singer of the highest caliber. And an incredibly modest and nice person.

Sacha, You are beyond amazing.....it was so wonderful at the going away party to listen to you. You have much to say with music and say it with your heart and soul.

I was ready to hate this song. I prepared myself to listen and be completely annoyed by the trite tune. I am happily surprised by this wonderful piece. Gorgeously composed and beautifully sung. Thanks for creating and sharing. Awesome work.

a life as precious as Jamey's should not go ignored. As a grown man who went through bullying before it was talked about i am so amazed to hear an accurate story on what it feels like to be targeted.

...was cool but was just myself. I played baseball & basketball, but I was still "uncool/weak/a fag". Everything I said, wore, did, showed interest in, etc was ridiculed, even when it was what everyone else was doing. Even my *laugh* wasn't right. I couldn't breathe without someone making fun of me. I became plagued by anxiety, panic attacks and depression at 11 or so. I was hated for what they thought I was & went from being confident to wanting to fade away. I was a 5th grader praying to die.

I'll add that this song resonates with me because I've known the realities of bullying based simply on an *assumption* of who I was. As one not gifted with great physicality or athletic ability but a passion for music instead, I was relentlessly bullied around 5th grade onward. I was presumed to be gay and rumors/lies spread in our tiny school; rumors started by those who'd been my best friends. I've been threatened, had my tires slashed, car and house egged, and more because I wasn't what...

Nice to see you posting again--it's been ages. Just wanted to say I've listened to your music for years (first songs I heard were Stuck in the Sunset and The Prodigal). I've never been able to sleep to silence for some reason and I often use your music at night as it's somewhat hypnotic and beautiful. It's also great for meditative walks. I tried my hand at a cover of Sweet Suicide on my page (hopefully you don't mind and I didn't do it a disservice). It's one I can personally relate to deeply.
