Ryan Bingham doesn't just sing; he paints a picture. His voice invites me to the deserts of Texas. I feel the sun beat on my back and burn the back of my neck. My shirt sticks to my skin due to the sweat from the heat.

Ryan Bingham won an Oscar for his music in the Jeff Bridges/Maggie Gyllenhall movie Crazy Heart. Great movie; if you haven't seen it, I urge you to do so. I love this song, the kick track especially. Plus, it mentions SIX Texas cities! I like the line, "Told the truck driver put the pedal to the metal cause Houston gets me down," because Houston is the armpit of Texas, but the last line, "Crawfish pie and eat jambalaya with a big ole coon-ass smile." is my favorite line! I guess it's the coon-ass smile!

I think the definition for coon-ass got lost in translation from Louisiana to North Texas where I grew up... Not a term of endearment in all the usage I've seen... Still a well written line, that paints a perfect picture of good times...

Coonass, or Coon-ass is used in reference to a person of Cajun ethnicity. Many consider it an insult but others consider it a compliment or badge of honor. Although many Cajuns use the word in regard to themselves, other Cajuns view the term as an ethnic slur against the Cajun people, especially when used by non-Cajuns.
