This song by Johnny Cash - "Hey Porter" - was covered by Ry Cooder in 1972 on his second album "Into the Purple Valley". The original version of "Hey, Porter" was recorded by Johnny Cash on September 1, 1954 and released as a single in July the following year. Cash wrote the song while on his way home from a four year stint in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Landsberg, Germany, and as such felt elated to be returning to his native South. Loving Johny Cash's music I still have to say that Cooder's bluesy version seems to me much more impressive than Cash's original.
