What's the shape of your Em (F#m)? I got this song on Drop Open G but Em (F#m) doesn't sound 100% good like yours...

Merry Xmas to you and your family and thanks for the prodigious number of videos you have posted - very much appreciated.

Sure, you could do that if you feel like it. But if you don't keep your guitar tuned up to open A for an extended period, it shouldn't bother the neck too much.

Hey Priv I know now that you want to have the high B and E ringing open on Reo speedwagon time for me to fly but on this one can you tune to open G and put capo on second fret. Less tension on neck and lower chance of breaking a string thx

The 1 5 1 3 5 1 refers to the notes in the scale. With the open tuning to A major, the guitar chord is built on a triad of the root, the 1, the third, and the fifth note in the scale, or for open A it is A E and C#. For E it would be E, G#, and B, so following Lindley's tuning pattern E-B-E-G#-B-E.

Thanks very much indeed...I don't understand 1 5 1 3 5 1, but I got the A-E-A-C#-E-A part! I think that because he was using the largely metal bodied and Bakelite Rickenbacker lap steel on this recording (and most of his other famous electric lap steel recordings like "Werewolves of London" for example) the tension was certainly bearable...probably more so than on the cheap all wood Rickenbacker Electro lap steel that I use.

My understanding is that he uses 1 5 1 3 5 1 tuning on his laps, and keeps a few on stage so he doesn't have to always re-tune. So following that for A the tuning would be AEAC#EA. Even on a lap that is a load, but according to Fretboard Mag, that is what he used.

Kinda following up on garbeaj's post regarding David Lindley's tuning, do you think you might add a lap guitar to your great collection? Some videos on say Lindley's great work on this song, or Ronnie Wood's lap guitar work with the Stones would be sweet. I recognize that is way too easy for me to say. Thanks for all your posts, they've helped me become a better plunker.

I'd even recommend tuning to open G tuning and putting a capo on the second fret. It puts less stress on the neck and the strings, and you can take the capo off and play Kief songs :)

The one and only time I saw Jackson was in the early 80's and - no lie - he was playing a blue Strat. Funny how life works sometimes.

thanks for this! Could you take a stab at Good Time Charlies got the Blues ?

Do you reckon Lindley used the same tuning on his Rickenbacker lap steel? I notice you seem to have a little more gain on your sound than Jackson's guitar has on the record...your gain level seems more like a compromise between Jackson and Lindley's more distorted lap steel. I reckon it sounds better on one guitar that way. Great job as usual!

Happy New year Priv.. at 0.18 Do u just have three fingers on the 3rd 4th and 5th strings of the 4th fret and B string open? muting the e strings? thx

privettricker

At 14, it's A string 4th fret, D string 2nd fret, G string 4th fret, and both E strings muted. At 18, it's ADG strings at the 4th fret, B string open, both E strings muted.
