Came out 11 yrs before i was born but is great song. Classic aussie song. Personally i think ron casey is a moron for what he said about normie roe. Guys like ron casey make my blood boil. Conscipted or non conscripted soldiers do an awesome job serving their country

Johnny Young wrote The Real Thing for Russell Morris too. Both excellent songs! I must google to see what else he wrote.

I remember my older sisters crying when Normie Rowe was conscripted back in the Sixties at the peak of his popularity. Went to Vietnam as an armoured personnel carrier driver so would have been at the sharp end with the grunts and probably involved in some nasty combat. He returned very different to the Normie from his pop singer days but was instrumental in gaining recognition and the welcome home parade for Vietnam vets in '87. In my opinion a true Australian hero. Love ya Normie!

At least Normie Rowe had the guts to face his conscription head on and not try and get out of it out like a lot of other bludgers. And what's he been getting all these years after, nothing but criticism for being a war monger, especially from idiots like Ron Casey. That's bullshit! People who weren't even born then should shut up about something they don't know anything about. I was in the Army at that time! And I served my country proudly for nine wonderful years. Normie only did what every other young soldier did, his duty, and now he gets it in the neck for being a warmonger. We should be proud that he still has the guts to get up and fight for his mates, I'd sink a tinny with him anytime. mate!
