Performer - Deanna Durbin

Music - Richard Rodgers

Lyrics - Lorenz Hart

"Lover" was written by Rodgers and Hart for the 1932 film "Love Me Tonight". It was first performed by Jeanette MacDonald.

In this version, Durbin sings a duet with herself. She is harmonizing over her own recording of "Lover".

Lover, when I'm near you

And I hear you speak my name

Softly in my ear you breathe a flame

Lover, when we're dancing

Keep on glancing in my eyes

Till love's own entrancing music dies

All of my future is in you

Your every plan I design

Promise you'll always continue to be mine

Hey lover, please be tender

When your tender fears depart

Lover, I surrender to my heart

This is how this song should go -- it is a wonderful waltz, and quite a sophisticated melody. We don't hear tunes like this anymore from Broadway. Perhaps this is because today's composers don't know what the black keys are for.

I LOVE the internet.  I've heard this on and off for my entire lifetime and loved it, but just saw it in Sabrina, looked up all the Soundtracks in IMDB for it, and finally found it.  How did intellectuals and aesthetes exist before the internet?

Unless something is seriously wrong with me, she manages, at 1:24, to sing in unison with herself, on a note with heavy vibrato, and control her voice so perfectly that it sounds like 1 singer- in fact, I saw this many, many times before even noticing. Also note how she sings both parts of a soprano/contralto duet just as naturally.

As Howard Thompson said: "The world's worst, and don't you miss it!" Absolutely hilarious send up of Jeanette Macdonald. From lovely kitsch to horrifying narcissism in a decade! A low camp classic, and why is she incessantly looking at her derriere? What a scream. I think I'll have to watch it again!!!!
