Robert smoked this track! Its a Tod Rungren cover but Palmer makes this his own, and his version of a great song is definitive.

Back in the day when Late night television had some class, I watched this artist perform on the Arsenio Hall show. He was truly a gifted artist & performer. Thank you Robert Palmer for the years we were given to listen to your songs.

"Can We Still Be Friends"We can't play this game anymoreBut can we still be friends?Things just can't go on like beforeBut can we still be friends? We had something to learnNow it's time for the wheel to turnGrains of sand, one by oneBefore you know, it's all goneLet's admit we made a mistakeBut can we still be friends?Heartbreak's never easy to takeBut can we still be friends? It's a strange sad affairSometimes seems that we just don't careDon't waste time feeling hurtWe've been through hell togetherDannana [etc], Can we still be friendsCan we still get together sometimes?Hey babe, can we still go on?We awoke from our dream, Things are not always what they seemMemories linger onIt's like a sweet, sad, old songDannana [etc],Can we still be friends

First time I've heard this version. I like how he funked up the instrumental interludes in his own Robert Plant way. I'm sure Todd was honored to have someone so brilliant cover this great song.

Great singer. Like a lot of people, I'm not a fan of his post Clues material.

Robert Palmer...may he rest in peace...wasn't afraid to cover anything. I mean, how can one be courageous enough and outrageous enough to cover the Gap Band's "Early in the Morning" or "I Want You" by Marvin Gaye? I do agree, however, that one can't improve on this classic by Todd Rundgren.

For somebody who had a whirlwind handful of years in the multi media and thus the public eye during the "Addicted to Love' to 'Simply Irresistible' period, Robert remains as an underrated and underappreciated artist. While he did have a stellar period in the pop limelight, he didn't sell himself out as a result of this by recording disposable pop rubbish, he didn't go the 'media darling' route by appearing widely on any & every chat show going and he didn't vainly posit himself as the next film star, social commentator or go-to bleeding heart for social causes. He had integrity and he kept it to the end, continuing a musical career driven by his heart and soul. I hazard to guess that the videos for the aforementioned 2 songs in the 80's are what constitute most casual observers' only real memories and knowledge of this wonderful singer. He embodied style and grace, made some good songs great & some very good songs timeless, which when all said and done is the epitome of what any great artist can ever hope to do. His 'career' as such was not that long, considering that at 54, many solo artists with a voice as unique and effective as his have numerous years left in them and never lose their core appeal. His own material was varied, interesting & unique and his choice of songs to cover was meticulous and unfailing - whatever he touched seemed to take on his own personal quality, character and style. RIP Robert Palmer - your class never went out of style, and never will....

Saw him perform three times, including in the college gym. Great show each time, but I wondered what it would have been like to hear him with Little Feat as his backup band just like in the studio.
