Robert Benoit plays guitars and his son, Colin Benoit, plays the jambe drum and bells on the Canadian Christmas song, The Huron Carol. A Jesuit missionary, Jean de Brebeuf, wrote the song in 1643 in the native language of the Huron people, borrowing the tune from a French folk song. English lyrics for the song were written in 1926 by Jesse Edgar Middleton.Visit www.robertbenoit.net to buy the cd - Christmas Instrumentals- Robert & Colin Benoit.

Would it be possible for you to post the tab on your website, perhaps in a pdf format document? I quite like this arrangement and it seems you use different guitars with different tuning - true? Thanks J

This arrangement is a great job. The melody of this carol is very typical of the taste of people that wrote the catholic and protestant hymnals in the beginning of the 17th century in France. Many profane songs of this period also rely on this style. I always thought that adapting this music to a bluegrass or jazz style was difficult and required musical tastes, skills and talent.

The original words were written by Jean De Brebeuf in 1643. It was translated to English in 1926 by Jesse Edgar Middleton. The music is a French Canadian melody called Jesous Ahatonhia.

Brebeuf died in 1649.

All sources I've come across credit Brebeuf for the original lyrics and he lived in the first half of the 17th century. This is a beautiful accoustic version of the song. My favourite rendition is the one by Tom Jackson. He also credits Brebeuf in his liner notes.
