George Olsen & His Music with vocal refrain (Billy Murray) - Say Arabella, Fox Trot (Gus Kahn - Ted Fiorito) Victor 1925 (USA) Recorded 23 June 1926, Mx Number BVE 32739

NOTE I added a few hours later: According to quite a discussion which went in progress after I uploaded this first Olsen's and one of earlier Victor's electrical recordings, here are a few interesting details which I found recently in the web http://gasdisc.oakapplepress.com/matrix3.htm

"At the beginning of the electrical recording era, about April 1925, RCA began imprinting a V.E. in a circle near or over the matrix number of acoustical recordings, below the label of all such recordings. When electrical recordings replaced acoustical performances, it was common to use the same basic matrix number, and to replace Bb or Cc with BVE or CVE. The reader should note the difference between a matrix number with a V.E. overprint stamp, and one with a BVE or CVE prefix. The former are electrically amplified or re-recorded from the original matrix, while the latter are new electric recordings.

Victor used these releases until the Western Electric recording process could be perfected, which was not until the following year. The first electric disc recording was probably made on or about February 1, 1925, when Victor allowed radio station WEAF in New York City to broadcast a recording by the violinist Renée Chemet."

This is really coolt. New modern music is horrible and noice but I love this. Teeangers should listen to the cool music of the 1920s not to the horrible music of today.

surely the most casual listener back then noticed a striking difference in the quality, label notwithstanding.

I like the early Olsen's also. However the recording of "Hot Aire" and "I'm Knee Deep In Daisies" Rec in Aug 1925 with the VE sounds as accoustic as anything recorded in 1924. Which is a shame because "Hot Aire" is one of his hottest recordings ever! I wonder just what happened? I'm sure it was recorded with a mike maybe someone forgot to boost the sound.

a favorite of mine...also like the other side..."row.....rosie". i really like the sound that they managed to get on these early electrics...sometimes you can really hear the acoustics of the church in camden they used... thanks for the tune and the great visuals. Happy New Year!

Thank you both for the information. I always wondered about what that part of the record was called. Now I have to check my records for the E, if it says use a tungstone needle...

I am totally nuts about these Olsen'searly electricals. Some time ago I uploaded his most famous "Who" which has a very similar & the same hot sounding like this one. Probably, the early stage of experimenting with the new recording system suddenly produced such setting of the instruments versus the microphones, that some outstanding accoustical zone was unexppectedly created resulting in the robust, juicy, hot sound. Thanks, Genia!

This is the first electric recording for George Olsen! I put this up on my channel a while back to demonstrate the Orthophonic consolette. I like the picture slide show you have here!

Actually the "E" surounded by a oval is in the run off, not the rim.
