I saw a glimpse of Tim Buckley at the beginning there, were they showcased on the same show? if so, I find that very fitting.

I love Richie Havens, and I admire his powerful version of "High Flyin' Bird" - except for the fact that by changing of the lyrics written by Billy Edd Wheeler, he distorted the meaning of the song... BIlly Edd's song was about a coal miner, not a "woman who lived down by the mine"...The singer's "old man", a coal miner, "never saw the sunlight" because he worked underground. The high flyin' bird represented his dream of being free from the danger and drudgery of the coal mines. "He had to fly away, but the only way to fly was to die". In Richie's altered version, his woman - who lived down by the mine - "ain't never seen the sun"... Why not? We are never told... In fact, although powerfully picked and beautifully sung, Richie's altered lyrics make no sense... Other fine versions of the song - from the Jefferson Airplane to Isaac Guillory to Neil Young & Crazy Horse - were true to Billy Edd's lyrics.

That is all Richie needed. To sing and play his music. Everyone got the message. He did not need 50 background singers.and 50 dancers looking ridiculous. He is the man. Love Your music Richie,

You've always been that high flying bird. And now you're free. I still can't believe you're gone...you left a hole in my heart and many others. I hope you look down once in a while as you fly by. Rest in Peace, my friend. xo
