I have been a fan of Thompson for over a quarter of a century, have every album and have seen him more times than I remember. But the thing is, as wild a statement as this might seem, I think this might be the best song he has ever written. It takes chances (four verses before the chorus?) but it is still absolutely perfect both lyrically and musically. There are lyrical ideas here that are risky yet completely pay off. This is as good as songwriting actually gets.
