For those who have just found him, check Fairport Convention. Started off as an English folk band with his then wife linda ( I believe) He's also been listed as one of the most influential guitar players of the 20th century by Rolling Stone.

I sometimes wonder if he was inside my head when he wrote this. Incredible!

and we have Bonnie Raitt to thank for covering his material and making him more known over here - she did the same for Paul Brady, from Ireland - his lyrics and melodies are as beautifully haunting as Richard Thompson's, in a different way. I'm hoping to see her in the Florida Panhandle in November, as she has Paul Brady opening for her.... check him out!

Oh Dear Maggie, I'll be seeing him live for the first time on Thursday. It seems I've been trying to prepare myself for a heartbreak for the last month. What is it about this man and the power that his gifts have over so many? What a voice, and such a highly photographable aura! Hope my heart can bear him bearing his.

Seeing him and Master Teddy Saturday. Another thing on the list of stuff that makes Jane cry.

I still think Gilmour's version is the best one.

i don't think Justin bieber even produces his own music. he just turns up sings and then its electronically manipulated to get it in key and then added to a pre written load of dribble.

I was there for this concert (Sierra Nevada Big Room, Chico,Ca.). This song just slayed us but the one that really brought the tears was "Beeswing". I have seen RT 4 times now and he is not only a incredible guitarist but he also writes some pretty beautiful songs.

Glenn, sorry, I'll take a small exception. Sway means influence or a power to be held under or within. To be held in someone's sway, is to be held by his influence or simply powerful presence. e.g. He was held in the sway of the preacher's commanding voice. Usage: hold sway [Old English idiom] [verb] be master of; reign or rule over

David's version is nice, but it is a mere pastiche of the song. I mean, he had a cellist and an 8 voice choir backing him. In addition RT's guitar work is 10 times Gilmours. Don't get me wrong. II am huge fan of Pink Floyd and Gilmour, but there is no comparing the two performances. Sorry, "nicely written" is just way short of the mark in assessing Richard Thompson's work.

Cant like it at all after hearing the other version by DG. Nicely written song however.,

AlternateViewpoint, "You hold me sway" is meant to be "me" - in this context "sway" means unable to decide, unable to move, waiting for someone else, dependant on someone else, "on hold" almost, almost "at the mercy" of someone else. We don't often use "sway" in this manner today which is probably why the meaning is somewhat unclear.

BTW, this is an incredibly poignant and moving rendition of his song. This gentleman really is a master of his art.

What does the lyric "You hold me sway" mean? It makes more sense if "me" is converted to "my", and Thompson's rendition here is ambiguous; however, all lyrics listings show "me" as the operative word.

This old house is falling down around my earsI'm drowning in a river of my tearsWhen all my will is gone you hold me swayI need you at the dimming of the dayYou pull me like the moon pulls on the tideYou know just where I keep my better sideWhat days have come to keep us far apartA broken promise or a broken heartNow all the bonnie birds have wheeled awayI need you at the dimming of the dayCome the night you're only what I wantCome the night you could be my confidentI see you on the street in companyWhy don't you come and ease your mind with meI'm living for the night we steal awayI need you at the dimming of the dayI need you at the dimming of the day
