It was an unusually warm and sunny autumn day in Athens, Georgia. Peter was walking to work at Wuxtry Records, the college-town's hippest, and best, record store, where he'd worked for most of 1979. As usual on delivery days like today he would spend the morning, or as much of it as he could wangle, looking through the new arrivals and putting aside albums for himself. The price would be docked from his wages of course, but it was one of his favourite perks to have the first change at the new stock. Today he was especially glad to find a copy of "The Velvet Underground & Nico": he knew someone who would appreciate an original copy with the peelable banana on the cover. Sure enough, that friend came in later that afternoon.
The two had often talked about the merits of the Velvets, and this shared love of many bands was what convinced Peter to try and form a band with his new friend Michael. That band would be R.E.M. and many acts to emerge during the late 1970 and 1980s, it was the Velvets who played a large part in their love of what would come to be known as "indie" music.

Sometimes I feel so happy
Sometimes I feel so sad
Sometimes I feel so happy
But mostly you just make me mad
Baby you just make me mad
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
Thought of you as my mountain top
Thought of you as my peak
Thought of you as everything
I've had but couldn't keep
I've had but couldn't keep
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
If I could make the world as pure and strange as what I see
I'd put you in the mirror I put in front of me
I put in front of me
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
Skip a life completely, stuff it in a cup
She said money is like us in time
It lies but can't stand up
Down for you is up
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
It was good what we did yesterday
And I'd do it once again
The fact that you are married
Only proves you're my best friend
But it's truly, truly a sin
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
Linger on, your pale blue eyes
