I cannot keep from crying every time I hear this. Not only because of Andy Kaufman and the kind and gentle soul he was, but because it reminds me of the feelings of doubt we all feel when the government tries to sell us on a new war or new weapons systems. I am old now but I was young once. My Dad had just returned from Washington D.C. after meeting with JFK when later we saw his head splinter from a high velocity bullet. I served in the UN in Iraq 2002-2003 with the Oil for Food Program, I just returned from Indonesia and spent most of 2014 in Saudi Arabia. I have spent much of my life in this international Kabookie theater and know we have good reasons to be skeptical of what 'They' are really saying. I met with the Ayatollah Khomeini in Paris in 1977 and worked inside Soviet domains trying to keep the world safe from nuclear war. I was one of those who 'retired' when in 1985 the Star Wars Program made many of us redundant and a close friend of mine was assassinated by our own agents because he was blocking nuclear proliferation in Sweden. I also watched as former Intelligence Agents moved over to serving private industry at that time and barely escaped assassination in 1993 in Cairo set up by a West German Sugar Company. I found about 29 points of contention with the Man on the Moon Legend - no stars, and s flag waving, in no atmosphere; two light sources; getting out of Earth's magnetosphere and surviving; enough fuel; Moon's gravity being less than Earth's when it pulls our oceans and keeps us in rotation; an electrical cord in the dirt going . . .where? etc. etc. So, the point REM is making about not seeing the obvious LIE of "a Man on the Moon," then you can't see anything and can't tell the difference between obvious lies and the Truth, hence, Good or Evil. So there's no point in talking to someone who is that blind, deaf, and dumb. And "nothing is cool." The good message in this song, is that Satan, the Father of Lies, gets it in the End after playing games with the Good People that REM is singing to. So that's good. And at the time, some very good people were prisoners of Satan and living with a person named Andy; dependent on his graces while he was locked in a battle between Satan and God for their well-being. Another funny thing too - one of those women got to be with her husband when they were an OTR truck driver team way back when. Satan couldn't find them as easily. She was also Cleopatra in Egypt. The Asp story was a lie, by Satan, so no one would know who she really was and who she was the Mother of. She was taken prisoner to Herod who married her and she bore him a son, and he tried to kill the boy, so they ran to Egypt. Excellent song and video. I heard this song on the radio on the way to work early one morning recently. I was still half asleep, still halfway hung over, still halfway stoned, and it really made the ride in nicer, the guitar work and melody is so good. I wasn't really listening to the lyrics because I was paying most of my attention to driving, but I had to look it up because of the really sad vibe. Since music is art the listener can interpret it however they want to. I can interpret the "man on the Moon" statement one of two ways. He could be saying he subscribes to a Luddite conspiracy theory, but that doesn't make sense if you tie it back to what the song is about, grieving a loss. I interpret it as a metaphor, an expression of cynicism and bitterness dealing with the loss of a friend.9 years ago
