In my younger life I lived in Providence RI and had the pleasure to watch the band at the living room on a few Saturday nights. I still remember the rumble, the feeling, hearing this, their first song played with such passion. I first listened to it on WBRU and experienced such reward to sit and listen to the band who at that point was just was a wandering Ga band trying to make its mark. I Loved REM then in their broken jeans, simple rockers with a soul

R.E.M. is similar to Pavement for me in that as they became better on their instruments, the music somehow got worse. The charm was in their sloppiness.

i used to get fricken hammered with Mills, in atlanta at Atkins Park. I drank with him for nearly 2 years before i dared to mention REM. 2 YEARS. all i could say, through my slitted red eyes was this: "Mikey, i haven't said a damned thing about REM to you since i met you, but i have to say this, thank you so much for the years of your music. You guys truly influenced my life." keep in mind, i've been doing shots with this man for a couple years (and this is the TRUTH: he was fairly regular at this bar, and he was just as normal as you and i -- well, waaaay more normal than myself....point being, this man was a Star, and all he wanted was to have a drink with cool people, and maybe pick up a chick from the bar. (u read it right.....NOT ONE TIME did i ever hear him play the Mike Mills / REM card.) in fact, i NEVER saw him go for the young hotties, he always just talked to cool people, and cool chicks. I've got drunk with 3 celbs in my life: Mike Mills, Goose Gossage and Bushwik Bill. i can honestly say, all three were absolutely badass, and more normal than you might think. but Mills, i drank with maybe 10-15 times over a couple years. and this man was simply like hanging out with your friend from high school. completely unpretentious, cool as hell. anyway, like i said, i mentioned REM one time only, after 2 years. it was sincere. he looked me in the eye and said "thanks man. we were just trying to make cool music". this happened in 2004. Atkins Park, Atlanta, GA.
