Certainly. Nancy Bricard, who studied it with Marcel Ciampi, recommends this. "Col pugno" - with the fist - a marking that is used in the Prokofiev Sixth Sonata. If you use the fist here, you get the explosive sound, and you don't risk hurting your fingertips if your aim is a little off and you hit the side wood instead - a fate shared by many who have played Debussy's L'isle joyeuse, which ends with the lowest A on the piano, one beat after the highest A on the piano.

@Pianist46 try to play with the boniest part of your fingers and hook your fingers. Instead of coming up off the key, hook your finger and slide then off the end of the key that's closest to you

Do you have any repeated note advice George? My piano has a heavy action; does that make is harder to play repeated notes quickly? Nice work!

@ktm64 just keep practicing tapping not only Ab but most keys with different fingering patterns...lol play one note with a different finger each time and practice at different tempos over and over again. it's not an easy thing to do

@ktm64 Those repeated notes are what make this piece so difficult. I haven't actually studied this piece, I just tried a few parts when I saw the score. But with the double glissandi, I don't think there's any way around hurt and bleeding fingers for a little while. Just practice them until it hurts, let them heal, then do so again. Eventually they will toughen up and you'll be able to do them fine. It's just like callusing fingers when you first play a guitar.

This is up there with Dinu Lipatti ! An incredible performance of a wonderful piece !

You can't criticise him for that, it's a perfectly legitimate way to do it, especially considering he's 13. Chenyin Li uses the same technique.
