I rememeber this song. Around '77 '78 the escalators in the london underground had smooth metal between them. If you dared you could use them as a mad kind of slide. It was a bit dodgy and you could find yourself going faster than running speed at the bottom and kind of crash into people. They put obstuctions on the central slide around the eighties I think. Nanny state. anyway the song is about riding for free by jumping the barrier and sliding down the middle. A kind of punk rite of passage.

They were very Bowie influenced , i saw them when changed their name to The Cuddly Toys-the audience was not to happy,the newer material being a bit weak.One bloke in the audience (it was at the Marquee) was challenging the singer to a fight.
