We have not progressed one inch as a society since those days; we still have witch hunts, kangaroo courts, and lynchings. The only difference now is the witches aren't people suspected of practicing magic. That was then. In the 1950s, the witches were people accused of being communists. In the early 2000s, the witches were people accused of being terrorists. Today, the witches are people - almost 100% male - accused of being rapists and domestic abusers. The legal proceedings for these modern "witches" are probably not quite as fair and impartial as they were during the Salem Witch Trials, but the resemblance is there, and it's uncanny. And while those poor men might not be *physically* lynched or burned at the stake, their lives are destroyed all the same, and many of them even commit suicide.
