I may be a complete idiot, but I read that she recorded this with a piano because she had no connection with the piano. I cant speak for her, Im hearing Tess, Im seeing Tess, think this is the dress the other dress. This is art.

Sorry Im an old man and I do understand White Chalk, Its Dorset and dirty and sticks to your footwear ,it sucks you down. Like Hardy it sucks everything out of you. Me I think I love this track because she felt the hurt of Hardy, we don't get choices. It is an awesome song

It's hard to describe why just the title of this song can have relevance to anybody who grew up in the chalk belt of southern England. I mean if she'd been from up north it could just as easily have been entitled gritstone or limestone, or from the west sandstone, and still had the same relevance to its audience. This is a Kent/Wiltshire people's song. It's the sense of place and home it evokes that is something special.

First saw/heard  Polly in 1992 (peel) and saw her live on the "dry tour" . Followed her career since. For me the "white chalk" will be regarded as her master piece. Full of  Ghostly beautiful tracks
