The relationship with the anima, or the Sirens of Ulysses, is a demanding one for the artist, which sometimes leaves no room for a developed physical relationship. Phil spent his life on the road in a career which finally betrayed him, broke and penniless. His siren engulfed him, which in the end was nothing. His allusions to the harbor and waterside signal his trips into the inner world, which is as enticing as a beautiful lady.

I don't think the song "I've Had Her" is about women or romance per se. I've always thought that Ochs was singing of the general futility of chasing one's desires and goals, which (as he saw it) never turn out to bring the pleasure and fulfillment sought once you've achieved them, and of the inevitable disappointment and disillusionment that follow all pursuits, all efforts, and all attachment to goals. At first I thought this was a kind of Buddhist teaching to beware of attachments, but with the final verse ("now the only way to touch her is the gun beside your head") I realized (including from my own experience with Churchill's 'black dog') that Phil Ochs was a tortured soul suffering from lifelong depression. The futility of effort and (especially) the inability to enjoy life, the world, and success, are common themes in the works of artists and authors (like Herman Melville, for instance) who suffered from depression.

Possibly Phil's greatest vocal performance, though Rehearsals for Retirement must run it close.

When this song first came out, i assumed that it referred to America, surely the freest place in the world, with 100 different textures/designs/colors of toilet paper to choose from, where the best and the brightest of the young were screaming nonstop hatred at a govt that had given them the highest standard of living in the world (they told us), Of course a closer look revealed racism, lies, exploitation, greed, WAR WAR WAR but HOW RUDE! to look closer. Now on top of this, add that most of the other countries in the world were knocking themselves out to try to be like America! Aaarrrrrgggghh! Foreigners thought we all were free and beautiful, well-educated and WINNERS and they wanted to talk, dance, dress, look like us. But Phil Ochs had that and believe him, it's nothing. Note I said "I assumed that". I never even thought about it, just recognized it. Probably completely off the mark hee hee.

There are many people in this world (and on YouTube) who have the brains of a slug. Phil was a genius and will always be my hero. RIP my beautiful friend.

This is NOT a misogynistic song. It is about falling for a woman, then having someone tell you "I've had her--she's nothing" and the tragedy of being influenced by that. The movie "Enough Said" deals with the same issue. Tim Hardin did an incredible version of this at Phil Och's memorial. Rest in peace, Phil.

No, because no one will ever look at it on the other side of the fence. Thousands of female writers and singers write songs exactly like this but against men in the same manner and I dont see any anti sentiment about that crap. This song is beautiful, it is as if the strings of a harp that descended from the heavens were woven into Phil's fingers and tendons to play this magnificent piece, and to degrade and demean it by saying it's misogynistic is a folly by any standard.

I think i understand what he meant, but he's not right. I agree with feminism as equal rights for woman, but at the same time alot of woman who call themselves "Feminists" aren't actually feminists. They are sexist against men, and give real feminists a bad name. It's horrible.

There is something about Phil Ochs's music that makes Bob Dylan look fake.
