I too love this demo and others have correctly commented on Phil's technique of singing mostly gibberish as he works out the melody and finishes the lyrics later. One of the things I love about Phil is that even though he is a drummer, he uses drum machines when composing demos AND uses them in the final production, adding acoustic drums to the mix later - building the layer as the song progresses. In this demo, the drum machine used is the Roland TR-909.

kudos man.. exactly what I was about to say.. this was during the writing process of the song..prob. on some portable home system used for writing.. its very raw, not from a major studio.. im happy i found this, as an artist I know this is a rare and valuable track to someone like me who can listen to this & then the mixed down radio version & my brain fills in the creative evolution process. its fascinating how he thinks

He's not using words he's using fills where he hasn't worked out the lyrics. This is working the melody.
