Dear 'TheCruithneach', :-) Sorry, but I don't understand how your comment (above) relates to my earlier entry... Maybe you intended to send it in reply to someone else's comment on this page? In any case, keep well. Patrick.

This is indeed an exquisite rendition of this traditional song, which was first interpreted with this specific tune by Andy Irvine, who recorded it on Sweeney's Men first album in 1968, famously accompanying himself on guitar. Andy has since re-recorded it on his recent [2010] album 'Abocurragh', accompanying himself on mandola this time and flanked by his pals Dónal Lunny and Liam O'Flynn. So, it could now (almost) be claimed as part of Planxty's repertoire! ;-)) With kind regards; Patrick.

It's hard to recommend any single album to the exclusion of the others. They're all good. Basket Of Light is probably a good starting point, though.

I saw Jacqui and John Renbourne play a duet concert at a small cafe in Virginia a number of years ago. Sadly they didn't do this song, but they played and sang beautifully for nearly 2 hours to a small audience of about 30. It was divine. I took along my copy of Solomon's Seal, which they both signed. A treasure I hold dear.

One of my favourite Pentangle tunes, for me this is Jacqui McShee's best performance ever

Riesce a trasmettermi le stesse emozioni di quando l'ascoltai la prima volta... era settembre del '72.

the song is beautiful, but I don't like the pentangle title or image., And one of the men on the album cover at the bottom has a duck's bill. It seems like a satanic images to me.

i think the original tapes for this album was deleted or lost so it never come out on digital formats. share the vinyl on youtube is a good idea. pentangle is great, solomons seal was the original groups last album in 1972.

A seed album of beautiful tunes. I too nearly wore it out. This, and Anne Briggs' version are two of the greatest, perhaps. But the Fairport song "Farewell" is utterly crystalline heart digging sorrowful joy. Peace

And the tune was adapted by Fairport Convention for their song "Farewell" which can be found on the album "Liege & Lief."
