You have to put it into perspective. This is a folk song, not a more commercialized seduction. Yes, her vocals are a little rough. I just listened to several covers of this song and I like the Gordon Lightfoot one the best. We are all entitled to our opinions. That was a pretty provocative song for its time.

I cannot believe some of these comments. I too like the Roberta Flack version but it is commercialized to make it sound that way. The original is written, folk style, to convey a man's love for his partner. It is supposed to have a slightly raw edge to it. It is a song for everyone to sing, not just confined to a recording studio. I wonder what the great American public would have thought had they know that Roberta was signing a song written by and for a communist. . . !

This is the WORST version of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"!!! I think the reason why this happened is because it was in 1957, but Peggy Seeger stinks! >:(

The first time ever I heard this song I thought I was hearing my heart sing. But it was The Chad Mitchel Trio. All the other versions fade in comparison. Roberta Flack's version is okay in its own right. This one has its merits, as well. But the ultimate is Chad Mitchell.

I seem to remember I was on a train returning from a summer school trip to St ives in I believe 1973 or 1974 .Kirsty MacColl my Art class mate told me that her Dad had written TFTEISYF .And that it had been the most covered song of the year?. And that the royalties were substantial. I dont know if I believed the story at the time. I have just googled it. Now I know she was telling the truth. I dont have the courage to look for Kirsty on Utube.

Now I understand...how this song came to be and why it sounds this way. Ewan ...James Henry Miller ... was Scottish. This was sung long before the cover by Roberta. I love that version. So it makes it feel odd to sit and listen to this...but I have a better understanding now...knowing the why and how and that time period ...the 50's. I was just a tyke but I do remember the 50's. Have older siblings who were into the birth of rock as it was ...and I am glad I was old enough to experience and remember some of it.

Roberts Flacks version brought me here. I gave it a listen but didn't like it. Maybe I just don't get folk music because this seems all over the place to me. What amazes me is how Roberta Flack could hear the potential in this. Maybe that's why she made it big and I work in a bank!!!
