Panzer doesnt literally mean "tank" in German, Panzer means "Armor", it could as well be a reference to a suit of armor worn by a knight. And the word Panzer used to describe tanks was really a shortend saying, since a "Tank" in german would be "Panzerkampfwagen" or shorted down to "Pz.kpfw."
