Late 50s or early 60s, my brother had a 78rpm record that we played on a wind-up gramaphone. I loved this one and, to this day, could sing every note and every word. I had no idea what I was singing or what it meant, but it has lived with me forever. Brian Matthews recently played The Shadows' version - which I confess I'd never heard - and I was stirred to find out more. How I appreciate Google! I've discovered that my memory and my recollection of the words and music are perfect! I still have no idea what they mean. I know nothing about the film, although I suspect my brother must have seen it. In my adult life I've become interested in the history of South America and would love to see the film. Does anyone know if it's available?

I saw this movie when it came out in Germany and was just mesmerized, both by the tragic story and the music. I bought the EP which, unfortunately, I loaned out never to get back. I'm so glad I found this song here. As much as I love her, I didn't care much for Joan Baez' version.

This wonderful old film was a favourite of the Classic cinemas circuit in the early sixties which is where i first saw it. Unfortunately it seems to have disappeared from view and is never shown even on late night television. But this song which was its theme tune became a world wide smash and various cover versions were produced but none that quite captured the spirit of this fine old film.
