Thankfully, I wasn't born in 1975 to endure nine weeks of what was possible the worst song ever made (in my humble opinion) Bohemian Rhapsody at number one. What self-indulgent horse shit. Thank God punk came along and put an end to that nonsense.

For those who don't know Paper Lace came from Nottingham. They were on Opportunity Knocks, a very popular X Factor type show from the late 60s and into the 70s. After that, Billy Don't Be A Hero came out and reached no 1 in the UK, while a hasty cover version by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods topped the US charts. When Paper Lace's next single, The Night Chicago Died, reached no 1 in the US, the mayor of Chicago was angry, while viewers of Opportunity Knocks saw egotistical host Hughie Green really crowing. After The Black Eyed Boys, the group's only other hit was We've Got The Whole World In Our Hands, with Nottingham Forest, a football team the group supported.I hated almost every hit created by Opportunity Knocks, and I despise the impact of shows like X Factor now. Very few worthwhile talents emerge from these shows (Mary Hopkin was one). Just to be clear: I always hated Paper Lace!

That's not the original single recording of Bye Bye Baby.I have all these in my collection (don't laugh). For all the badness of a lot of them, and the discomfort that Gary Glitter is there, I honestly think it's more interesting to listen to than a list of today's chart toppers, which, with the odd exception, sound like the same song.

ABBA, Queen & David Bowie are the standouts here - by far.

Whenever people bemoan the state of music today, I show them this video and remind them that 90% of chart music has always been absolute garbage. There are about 5 songs on this video that could rightfully be called classics.

Wow, and for me, Elton John was the 70s! So prolific! ( Elvis was the 50s, The Beatles were the 60s, and Madonna (not Michael Jackson) was the 80s)

1974 really was a low point in British music. There were good songs around, but the usual rubbish hogged the top spots. Chinn & Chapman should have been charged with crimes against music!
