Hiya Jared. I first heard it on the Cold Mountain sound track sung by Cassie Franklin.. then looked up some different versions, including Jean Ritchie - to build my own lyrics.. Then whilst singing it at a gig with a folky friend in the audience he said it was based on Mattie Groves, which travelled from England to America and became Lady Margaret.. possibly. It's always a mystery with these old tunes! Glad you like it though! thanks

This is very beautiful and very well sung. Could you please tell me what relation this version has to the version sung by Jean Ritchie? The lyrics are similar but the melody different. With traditional do you mean traditional Devon? I was under the impression that this song was traditional United States folk. Perhaps immigrant brought then the melody changed being passed down? I'd love to know any knowledge you have on this piece. ~Jared
