The Battle of the Somme, took place during the First World War between 1st July and 18th November 1916 in France, on both banks of the river Somme . The battle consisted of an offensive by the British and French armies against the German Army, which since invading France in August 1914 had occupied large areas of that country. One of the largest battles of the First World War, by the time fighting had petered out in late autumn 1916 more than 1.5 million casualties had been suffered by the forces involved. It is understood to have been one of the bloodiest military operations ever recorded.
The opening day of the battle of The Somme on 1st July 1916 saw the British Army suffer the worst one-day combat losses in its history, with nearly 40,000 wounded and 20,000 killed. The composition of the British Army was at this point made up of volunteer battalions comprising men from specific local areas. This meant these losses had a profound social impact and has given the battle a lasting cultural legacy in Britain. It also had a tremendous social impact for the Dominion of Newfoundland, as a large percentage of the men that had volunteered to serve were lost on that first day.
