I am going to tell you all the real and true story behind this amazing song!...My father went to prison by taking the heat of his ex-wife and her brother stole..((long story short my father had a little girl by this woman and her name was Amy...he wrote this song "Dance little Amy" and my grandmother sent this in and didnt copy write this so therefore they stole this and renamed it. We do have the original...love you dad you really make others happy with such a wonderful song and amazing lyrics. <3

Bob, I had never heard the original version, but my youth was filled with choked up moments imagining he later version. I am ordained and did just that married a couple who had a child and "years" later they met and once he found out he was a father they married and I was blessed to perform the ceremony and yes they played this very song!! Just love the DIRT!

I love the pictures that this song brings to mind! It's also done VERY WELL by John Denver on his album 'Forever, John', but it's never been put on YouTube. SAD! I really love the NGDB and their folksy kind of singing, but I must admit that I love John Denver just a little bit more. Always have, always will! Anyway, GREAT SONG!!

My understanding about the story behind this song is that Jimmy has a daughter named Jean and when Jean was little she used to dance while Jimmy sang and played guitar. Well, Jimmy and his wife split up, and in an attempt to charm his ex-wife into getting back together he wrote this song and played it for her while little Jean danced. Didn't work, his ex-wife was more interested in the alimony and child support. Still, a great song and cute story. I had always imagined it being about a couple who had a child before they got married, and the child was always praying that her parents would one day get married. And they did. I like my version of the story better.
