I couldn't keep a straight face when I first heard this music accompanying this sex scene. Then when Laurie accidentally turned on the flamethrower in the middle of the chorus, I nearly died laughing.

I understand, but sometimes there is such thing as too earnest. I can accept some of the melodramatic stuff like The Sound of Silence playing at the funeral, but this felt like too much given its context to the plot and tone trying to be establish. Especially since the scene prior was a rather straightforward if very stylized action scene that suddenly turned incredibly goofy in this sequence. And the characters hadn't really shown the chemistry to match the tone of the song by this point.

I completely disagree. Aside from the over the top bit with the fire, I felt the melodramatics of the music/lyrics synched damn well with the themes and events of the film. People are so damn committed to cynicism and understatement these days that they don't get that sometimes ridiculously earnestness and emphatic expression are actually warranted.

I get so tired of the prudes who feel so uncomfortable with the "juxtaposition" of the word hallelujah over a sex scene. It's so damn obvious that they are missing the point and don't understand the lyrics apart from the movie in the first place. The song and the scene are perfect match because of the connection of passion and pain. If they cracked open a freaking bible once in a while, they'd realize that the stories of david and samson are of similar in vein!

This was probably one of the worst song choices in the film. It was so over the top and cartoon like so that the scene lost any intimacy. I actually laughed out loud when the music started. And it all led up to a bad punchline with the spewing fire gag. Lame-o!
