09/09/92 - Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion, UCLA (MTV Video Music Awards), Los Angeles, CA

MTV had said to Nirvana that they could play any song they wanted so they chose Rape Me, but MTV had insisted playing Smells Like Teen Spirit instead so it had come to an agreement to play Lithium. Kurt had pissed off MTV by playing Rape Me, MTV was that close to pressing the off switch.

I remember watching this during the original broadcast. It was the first time I heard Nirvana and it made me a fan.

I bet the producers in the control room shit themselves when Kurt started out with Rape Me. Legendary performance.

In school I got in trouble today because my teacher unplugged my headphones to see what I was listening to for no reason and this blasted at full volume.

LOL ROTF THAT WAS GREAT! I'd read about the Rape Me dispute, and that they played the first few bars of it. But this is the first time I've SEEN the 1992 MTV performance. Wow! Nirvana at their finest and funniest. Lyrics transcription anyone? “…And just maybe I’m to blame for all I’ve heard / But I’m a turd / …I’m so retarded I can’t take MUFFLED—WHAT??” And they sound sooo goood, Kurt’s voice is rich and clear. Gotta give MTV credit, their sound systems are awesome, notwithstanding Kurt’s assault on the speakers! That was fun, inNIRVAtiNg even. Thx mucho NirvanaSmokes. :>)) #nirvana #nirvanamtv #nivanalithium

Wow In Utero wasn't even released in '92, so was "Rape Me" played in the beginning the world's first preview of Nirvana's next album?

You know what I mean ....right before the final verse. I guess its not a real guitar solo because its with the bass guitar but they cut it out for time.

For those that don't know the story behind this......Mtv wanted them to play smells like teen spirit but the band (mainly Kurt) wanted to play a new song called "rape me" because he hated that he had to play smells like teen spirit everywhere he went. The band felt there were a lot of better songs on Nevermind. And Kurt hated how big and "commercial" there song was becoming. But Mtv didn't feel rape me was exactly the best choice for live tv etc etc etc So they finally decided on playing lithium and Mtv agreed. So to fuck with the producers they started playing rape me lmao and the reason they cut the guitar solo out of lithium is because they only had 5 minutes of performance time. At the end Dave was waving to axl rose because of the ongoing feud between axl and Kurt.

Dave Grohl is an animal on drums......its a shame to think what Nirvana would've been if they fulfilled their 7 album deal with Geffen. Last great rock band....there's been some good ones but nothing even close to Nirvana :(
