It's just one more remarkable aspect of Nellie that she can understand the plight of growing old even as she, in this recording, is still in her twenties. Old people get short shrift in our youth-obsessed society, but our culture is especially hard on older women. In earlier times, even the greatest of warriors were held in contempt once they could no longer hold their own in battle - the sagas talk of how the young warriors pelted them at meals with discarded bones. People are always measured and esteemed by what they can do, so as people age, they seek surrogates for performance. Men can maintain some semblance of performance well into middle age, and can father children well into their dotage, so it is a gradual decline that they face. But women have always been esteemed in proportion to their sexual appeal and ability to bear children, both of which decline after thirty, so it's no coincidence that thirty is a defining moment in a woman's life, and a chill wind that whispers doom. So it's no surprise that people seek surrogates to amend their ability in proportion to its loss. Money, by its nature, is a surrogate of ability and power, so there's no surprise that the middle-aged seek to amass it, and the elderly cling to as much of it as they can and live in awful fear of losing it, and in the loss, losing all position and respect among men.Nellie McKay - The In Crowd

Extremely underrated singer. She talks more sense and reality in her songs than most other so-called "musicians" like Beyonce and Lady Gaga.

You just used the "n" word... I therefore assume YOU are a racist... Come on man, lighten up; the world and life itself is never as easy as ABC. Think for once, it'll change you.

@GloriaWa it's Yoko Ono's line, inspiring the song that was written by both Lennon and Ono

Don't forget that Yoko One first made the statement and John and she wrote the song together. She never gets the credit she deserves.

Just goes to show you how incredibly dumb the masses are. This genius of a woman is relatively unknown, even though her music is some of the greatest music in the last decade. Yet someone as talentless as beiber or perry gets all the money.

@Timmygogrr She isn't a racist. The use of the n word is a reference to a song by John Lennon called "Woman is the Nigger of the world". (He wasn't a racist either.) Google the lyrics of that song and you'll understand what it means.
