- Lyrics:

Powderfinger.

Look out, Mama, there's a white boat comin' up the river

With a big red beacon and a flag and a man on the rail

I think you better call John 'cause it don't look like they're here to deliver the mail

And it's less than a mile away

I hope they didn't come to stay

It's got numbers on the side and a gun and its makin' big waves.

Daddy's gone and my brother's out huntin' in the mountains

Big John's been drinkin' since the river took Emmy Lou

So the Powers That Be left me here to do the thinkin'

And I just turned twenty-two

I was wonderin' what to do

And the closer they got the more those feelin's grew.

Daddy's rifle in my hand felt reassurin'

He told me, "Red means run, son, and numbers add up to nothin'"

But when the first shot hit the dock I saw it comin'

Raised my rifle to my eye

Never stopped to wonder why

Then I saw black and my face splashed in the sky.

Shelter me from the powder and the finger

Cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger

Just think of me as one you never figured

Would fade away so young

With so much left undone

Remember me to my love, I know I'll miss her.

My brother is rather stoic, but this great song actually brings him to tears... What fantastic songwriting and lyrics! Neil can transport you to a different time and place...

Try Whistling This

This is what Neil should have called his music player and bundled it with a few grams of cocaine.

After all these years I still can't get this song out of my head, and hey I don't really want to. So emotional, so powerful, seems to embed itself into my soul, and it always brings me close to tears. Thankyou Neil for just makin my life better for you being there

Obviously "John" and crew were running drugs. A white boat with a big red beacon, flag and numbers on the side doesn't exactly sound like a Somali pirate ship if you know what I mean. Sounds to me like this song is about a DEA standoff where John and crew make their last stand against the authority. Brilliant lyrics to say the least.

Just really love this one! Imagination and inner sensations fly every time!

For me, the Live Rust version is definitive. His voice is much stronger and guitar tone much, much ballsier. When you get used to hearing that, this version just sounds weak in comparison.
