Harlow - My Secret Life. *audio*
from the debut album 'Harlowland', self-released by the band in 2001. Produced by Pat Smear.
Harlow were an L.A. based all girl band, led by British ex-pat Amanda Roots (formerly of U.K. outfit Fluffy), and also featuring bassist Chimene Gonzalez (of The Penny Dreadfuls), drummer Rebecca Gibb and Rayshele Teige on rhythm guitar. Formed in 1999 as P.U.S.H. and then Ansias, they eventually settled on the name Harlow A.D. which would later be shortened to simply 'Harlow'.
Their claim to fame came when VH1 offered them a spot on their 2001 reality competition show "Bands On The Run", a cross between "Survivor" and MTV's "Road Rules" but with a rock n roll twist. The premise of the show (from Elle magazine, April 2001): VH1 chose four unsigned bands from among thousands of entries to compete for $50,000 and the ultimate industry prize: a shot at a recording contract. Let loose with new equipment and SCOOBY DOO-esque vans, the bands embark on a nationwide tour, cameras in tow. The rest - promotion, pricing, and of course, performance - is up to them.. Every four weeks, the group with the least amount of revenue gets voted off the island - uh, kicked off the tour - and the one who earns the most after ten wins.
Unfortunately, Harlow did not win the competition (that prize went to Dallas-based Flickerstick), but the appearance on the show did manage to stir up lots of buzz about the band. Despite this, the band decided to turn down several major label deals to self-release their first album, produced by former Germs guitarist Pat Smear.
What happened after the release of "Harlowland" is somewhat hard to decipher: the band continued playing shows for several years, although guitarist Rayshele and drummer Rebecca both left the band at some point in time and were replaced by Melody Patron (formerly of the band Snap-Her) on guitar and Toby Lee Jones on drums. At some point mid-decade the band became inactive, although it's unclear whether they broke up or just stopped recording and performing together. For a band that arrived with such a loud roar, it's a shame to see them go out with a quiet yawn.
