Song: My Old Man

Artist: Tonic

Album: Lemon Parade

Release: 1996

LYRICS:

Me and my old man

Don't see eye to eye

We take our walks outside

Underneath the birch trees

He said I think it's gonna freeze this year

I said I gotta get away from here

Me and my old man

Me and my old man

Should have been enough to know

That you'd let us all down

Could have been enough to try

Without making a sound

It's all part of the plan my dear

It's all part of the plan my dear

So we walked along the mending walls

Laid beneath the tortured talls

And we sang a song of newfound cheer

Laughed at the passing years

Yeah we talked about things to come

Talked about the battles won

He said I think it's gonna freeze this year

I said I gotta get away from here

Should have been enough to know

That you'd let us all down

Could have been enough to try

Could have been enough to try

Oh I've been such a fool

Spent my life waiting for you

Through these trees I see

With my father's eyes

I realize the weight

Should have been enough to know

That you'd let us all down

Could have been enough to try

Without making a sound

It's all part of the plan my dear

It's all part of the plan my dear

It's all part of the plan my dear

Between me and my old man

Gotta get away from here

Gotta get away from here

Gotta get away from here

Gotta get away from here

Gotta get away from here

My son picked up guitar with the natural ability I wish God had given me; and I down loaded all the tabs to this album and said you have to learn it all....one day when you are old enough...you will thank me!!!!

Lemon Parade is way on up there in my fav-albums. Melodies from the clouds or somewhere nice.

All great songs on this album, but "Casual Affair" and "Mountain" just blow me away.....having been there.

@VerticalHorizonFreak His father disappeared on January 21, 1980 and has not been seen since. He had been battling paranoia and schizophrenia but often resisted treatment. It's a very troubling story and a very sad story, which makes this song even more difficult to hear, especially for anybody whose family member has also battled mental illness. Still, one of the best songs on this (or any) Tonic album!

Lemon Parade is a classic.... these guys are one of the most underrated alternative/roots bands ever, all songs are well structured.

@VerticalHorizonFreak I've listened to this song countless times. I could always relate somehow but I didn't know where this song originated. Sad. Those lingering guitar notes are so reminiscent of the persistant pain of abuse.

This song is just truly amazing. Honestly, I just don't know how Emerson did it. Gives me goosebumps each time. For those who don't know, his father was an abusive schizophrenic who abandoned him when he was a child. This song is so sad, but beautiful at the same time.

Amazing album. I bought it when it was released after hearing these guys on some radio show way back. I still think it's Tonic's best album overall, but Sugar is pretty amazing too.

I can't believe how many songs on this album are SO DAMNED GOOD!!! Sometimes a group puts out an album where there isnt a bad song in the lot!! Maybe it's because I just listen and listen over and over to a CD sometimes.. so I get accustomed to all the songs.. but DAMN this one is good!!
