Back when records were a big deal, there were two sides A-side (the front, usually which had the songs that were suppost to be listened to first, to become more popular than the B side of the record (Which is the opposite side of the A-side)) Same thing with the name Album, came from the whole record deal. Producers just put the songs they thought wouldn't be a hit on the B-sides, usually was never the case.

When a band puts out a single, which is a song from an album released on its own, they'll put another song - usually not from the album - out on the same CD. That's a B-side.
